Beyond Expectations: What Extended Breastfeeding Taught Me About the Female Body

There are moments in motherhood that stay with you.

Not because they're extraordinary, but because they quietly reveal something you hadn't fully understood before.

Recently, I became suddenly ill, spending hours being sick before finally making it to bed, exhausted. My body ached, my head pounded and all I wanted was to sleep.

But throughout the night, my toddler still wanted to breastfeed.

He wasn't aware that my body had nothing left to give. He wasn't being demanding. He simply wanted comfort from the person he trusts most.

Lying there between exhaustion and nausea, I couldn't stop thinking about the female body.

How often we ask it to do impossible things.

To recover, to nourish, to comfort, to heal, to work and just to keep going.

Sometimes all at once.

The female body has an extraordinary ability to hold contradictions. It can feel depleted yet continue to nurture. It can be vulnerable and incredibly powerful in the same moment. It can carry visible and invisible burdens that so often go unnoticed.

Extended breastfeeding has taught me this more than anything.

Long after the newborn stage has passed, your body can still be a source of comfort, connection and security for another human being. It's a relationship that exists beyond many people's expectations of motherhood, yet for countless families around the world, it is simply part of everyday life.

Every breastfeeding journey is different. Some last days, some weeks, some months and some years. Some end by choice, while others end through circumstances beyond our control. None is more valid than another.

For me, continuing to breastfeed a toddler has become another reminder that women's bodies rarely fit into neat definitions. We are often expected to be everything to everyone, while quietly adapting to every stage of life ourselves.

Perhaps that's why I've become so interested in redefining beauty.

Neither as perfection nor youth

But as something found in resilience, individuality and complexity.

At Kaali Boutique, we've always believed that beauty extends far beyond conformity. Jewellery has never been about becoming someone else. It's about expressing the person you already are.

The woman who is nurturing and ambitious.

Exhausted yet resilient.

Soft yet incredibly strong.

Gentle yet impossible to underestimate.

Women have never been one thing.

Why should beauty be?

As we recognise World Breastfeeding Week, this isn't a statement about how anyone should feed their child. Every family's journey is different, and every woman deserves support and respect in the choices and circumstances that shape her experience.

Instead, it's a reflection on the remarkable complexity of women's bodies—and a reminder that perhaps the most beautiful things about us have never been the ones society has found easiest to define.

Shared during World Breastfeeding Week, with appreciation for every woman navigating motherhood in her own way, and in celebration of beauty beyond conformity.
